Joe* was abandoned as a child and found living on the streets.
Like almost all of the young people in Baptist Care SA’s Tumbelin GO program, Joe has a traumatic history and complex life situation.
Many of the young people connected to the program face real and significant barriers to employment, including severe mental health issues, substance abuse and/or experiences of family and domestic violence.
But Tumbelin GO is a different kind of career planning program.
Run from the Southern Adelaide and Eyre Peninsula regions, Tumbelin GO is based on our belief that young people who can discover and experience connection with themselves and others, and develop and maintain their capacity to build positive, healthy relationships, are more likely to secure training and/or employment.
The program combines group adventure therapy sessions with career coaching and planning and there is intent behind every activity.
Adventure activities include orienteering, caving, kayaking, hiking, bubble soccer, archery tag, rock climbing, snorkelling, equine therapy and horse riding.
"The activities help build confidence, resilience, problem solving, communication and other life skills (so that people can become job ready)," explains career coach, Sue James.
Staff work with job providers and other key organisations to help young people realise and meet their potential.
Although Joe finds it hard to trust people, staff have built a great relationship with him and together they’ve worked hard to achieve his goal of getting his first job and earning his own money.
Despite struggles with literacy and numeracy, Joe recently secured short term work where he impressed his employers with his work ethic and received a positive reference. He has now moved into his own home for the first time.
To date, 66% of Tumbelin GO participants have been employed, enrolled in training courses and/ or work/volunteer placements.
Overwhelmingly, participants report improved self-confidence, self-worth, social skills and mental health. *not his real name
